お客様から、とても良い写真をいただきました。
おそらく、オーバーオール単体の写真だけを見ていたら、失礼ながら
「汚いな……」
で済ませてしまっていたかもしれません。
ただ、届いた写真に写っていたのは、靴修理の現場で日々着用されている Wrecking Crew PT でした。
靴を削る。
磨く。
染める。
接着する。
機械を回す。
その作業の中で、ボンドやマシンのオイル、染料、革の粉、磨きの跡が、少しずつデニムに重なっていったそうです。
新品の時には、もちろん何も付いていなかった汚れ。
でも、こうして見ると、そのひとつひとつがとても格好良く見えます。
デニムの経年変化というと、ヒゲやハチノス、アタリのような色落ちに目が行きがちですが、ワークウェアにとっての本当の表情は、もしかするとこういう部分にあるのかもしれません。
洗って落ちる汚れもあれば、
落ちきらずに残る汚れもある。
その残った跡が、その人がどんな場所で、どんな仕事をして、どんな時間を過ごしてきたのかを教えてくれます。
靴を直す人の服が、靴と同じように少しずつ育っていく。
そう考えると、この Wrecking Crew PT という名前にも、また違った意味が生まれてくる気がします。
壊すためではなく、
直すために働く服。
そして、その作業の跡まで含めて完成していく服。

We received some truly wonderful photos from a customer.
To be honest, if I had only seen photos of the overalls by themselves, I might have simply thought,
“They’re dirty…”
and left it at that.
But what we saw in the photos was a pair of Wrecking Crew PT being worn every day in a shoe repair workshop.
Grinding shoes.
Polishing them.
Dyeing them.
Gluing them.
Running the machines.
Through all of that work, traces of glue, machine oil, dye, leather dust, and polishing marks gradually built up on the denim.
Of course, none of those stains were there when they were brand new.
But when you see them like this, every single one of those marks looks incredibly beautiful.
When we talk about denim aging, we tend to focus on things like whiskers, honeycombs, and fades.
But perhaps, for workwear, the true expression lies in places like this.
Some stains come out in the wash.
Some stains remain.
And the marks that remain tell us where that person has been, what kind of work they have done, and how they have spent their time.
The clothes of someone who repairs shoes slowly grow and develop, just like the shoes they work on.
Thinking about it that way, the name Wrecking Crew PT seems to take on a slightly different meaning.
Not clothes made to destroy,
but clothes made to work for repair.
And clothes that become complete together with the traces of that work.
