モノづくりって、結局は自己満足をきっかけに始めるしかないと思っています。
ビジネス的な言い方をすれば、マーケットインとかプロダクトアウトとか、いろいろあります。
でも、「世の中のトレンドがこうだから、これを作ろう」という仕事は、資本も情報も持っている大手のほうが、ずっと器用にできる。
私たちのようなブランドにとって大切なのは、プロダクトアウトという言葉より、もう少しミクロなところ。
「自分が欲しい」 「自分が着たい」 「自分が見て興奮する」
そんな自己満足から生まれた熱を、製品を通して誰かへ伝導させることだと思っています。
昔、私の拘りに対して、
「それって、お前のオ○ニーじゃん」
と言われたことがあります。
たしかに、その通りなのかもしれません。
でも、自分自身が興奮できないものを作ったって仕方がない。
抜けない物を作ったって、仕方がないですよね。
大手が作ったプロの映像を観ても、結局は「やるべきことを、きちんとやっている」だけに見えてしまうことがあります。
だからこそ、本番そのものより、そこへ至るまでの背景や、その人にしかないストーリーが大切になる。
まずは自分を興奮させる。
それを続けていれば、いつか誰かを興奮させることができる。

I believe that making things ultimately has to begin with self-satisfaction.

In business terms, people talk about “market-in” and “product-out” approaches.

But creating something simply because it happens to be trending is a game that large companies—with far more money and information—will always be better equipped to play.

For a brand like ours, what matters is something even more personal than what the term “product-out” suggests.

“I want this.”

“I want to wear this.”

“This excites me.”

I believe the most important thing is to take the heat born from that personal obsession and transmit it to someone else through the product.

Years ago, someone once said of my obsession with details:

“Isn’t that just you jerking yourself off?”

Maybe they were right.

But there is no point in making something that doesn’t excite you.

If you can’t get off on what you make yourself, what’s the point?

Sometimes, when I watch slick, professionally produced adult films, I find myself thinking that they are simply doing everything they are supposed to do—and nothing more.

There are campus scenarios, workplace scenarios and every other kind of setup imaginable. But once everyone is naked and the main event begins, those differences start to disappear.

That is precisely why everything outside the main event—the buildup, the personality and the story behind it—matters so much.

First, excite yourself.

Keep doing that, and one day you may be able to excite someone else.
