「Virtual Insanity」
This month’s WORKERS collection has arrived.
First up is the Double V Sweatshirt.
For me, vintage sweatshirts have always meant a V insert at both the front and back of the neckline. So when sweatshirts with horizontally oriented fabric became so popular in recent years, I was a little puzzled at first.
I suppose the double V is, in my mind, the sweatshirt equivalent of a pair of single-sided-tab XX jeans.
The “Nyan Tag,” featuring a running cat, is a lovely touch, and there’s a military-inspired “WKERS” logo on the left chest.
Apparently, when Tateno’s mother saw it, she called him and said,
“You’ve spelled WORKERS wrong!” Haha.
No matter how old you get, your mother will always be your mother.
I think I’ll remember that story every time I see the logo.
And then there’s the other piece.
Some time ago, I noticed a rather unusual hat on display at the WORKERS office. When I asked about it, Tateno told me it was inspired by the hat worn in that famous Jamiroquai music video.
“Virtual Insanity.”
Is the room moving, or is he?
I’m sure many of you remember that strange dance—and that enormous hat.
There was a time when the clothes musicians wore in music videos looked impossibly cool.
Both Tateno and I grew up in that era.
Music videos, films, even novels.
Sometimes the people and scenes we discover in them spark our imaginations and make us want to create clothes.
So when I heard that Tateno was finally making his own version of the jacket from that video, I knew we had to carry it at TCB.
It looks like something you might casually find on a rack in a supermarket overseas.
But put it on the right person and let him dance, and it becomes unforgettable.
I think that’s part of what makes music and fashion so interesting.
Apparently, the original was fleece, but WORKERS has made its version in sweatshirt fabric.
It’s perfect for throwing on when you head out around the neighborhood at this time of year.
Or you could wear it to try that dance where you can’t quite tell whether the room is moving or you are. Haha.
The shoot brought back so many memories that we started playing “Virtual Insanity” in the shop.
Then I happened to ask Ryo,
“What does ‘Virtual Insanity’ actually mean?”
“Something like madness in a virtual sense,” he replied.
That made me look up a Japanese translation of the lyrics. I was surprised by how much they seemed to describe the world we live in today, even though the song is almost thirty years old.
A song I remembered so fondly suddenly struck a different chord with me in 2026.
I hadn’t expected a piece of clothing made by Tateno to lead me back to it in quite this way.
By the way, the black hat in these photos was added using AI.
To be honest, I did hesitate a little before editing them.
But there I was, hearing echoes of today in lyrics written almost thirty years ago, while using AI to edit photographs taken as a tribute to that very song.
That, too, felt like a little bit of “Virtual Insanity.” Haha.
The clothes arrived, we put on a song we used to listen to, and I found myself reading lyrics I hadn’t paid much attention to back then.
This delivery brought us a moment like that, too.
Thank you, as always, Tateno.
