先日、フラッと入った香水屋さんで、香水ではなく本を買いました。
全然知らなかったお店だったのですが、
「匂いを売っているお店が、どうやって本でそれを伝えるんだろう？」
ということが気になったのがきっかけです。
読んでみると、作り手の想いや、そこに登場する人たちに惹かれて、
気づけば
「これはどんな匂いなんだろう。嗅いでみたい」
と思っている自分がいました。
そんな話を専務にしたら、
「俺が去年、この店に買いに行って、めちゃくちゃ良かったって言ったじゃん」
「本当、俺のそういう話には興味ないんだから」
と指摘されました。笑
着てもらえたら良さが分かる。
匂ってもらえたら良さが分かる。
そう言う人は、きっとごまんといると思います。
でも本当に大変なのは、
その手前にある
「着てみたい」
「嗅いでみたい」
と思ってもらうことなんだなと、改めて感じました。
めちゃくちゃ話は脱線しますが、
先日、食事にお呼ばれして年上の男性の部屋に行くと、
「モテるために照明にこだわった」
「椅子にもこだわった」
「でも女の子は来たことがない！」
と言っていました。
きっと部屋そのものにこだわることも大事なんだけど、
その部屋に来てもらうためのアプローチも、同じくらい大事なんだろうなと。
男子校の先輩の説法をうわの空で聞きながら、
そんなことに思いを馳せたのでした。
The other day, I wandered into a perfume shop and ended up buying a book instead of perfume.
It was a shop I knew absolutely nothing about, but what caught my attention was this question:
“How does a shop that sells scent try to communicate that through a book?”
That curiosity was what made me pick it up.
As I read it, I found myself drawn to the thoughts of the people behind the shop and the people featured in the book. Before I knew it, I was thinking,
“I wonder what this smells like. I want to try it.”
When I told our managing director about this, he said,
“I told you last year that I went to that shop and thought it was amazing, didn’t I?”
“You really never listen when I talk about things like that.”
He was right. Haha.
“If you wear it, you’ll understand how good it is.”
“If you smell it, you’ll understand how good it is.”
I’m sure there are countless people who say things like that.
But what’s truly difficult is the step before that.
Making someone think,
“I want to try wearing it.”
“I want to try smelling it.”
That’s what I was reminded of.
This is going to go completely off topic, but the other day I was invited to dinner at an older gentleman’s place.
When I got there, he told me,
“I chose the lighting carefully so I could be popular with women.”
“I chose the chairs carefully too.”
“But no girl has ever come here!”
I’m sure paying attention to the room itself is important.
But I also realized that the approach that makes someone want to come to that room is just as important.
As I half-listened to this sermon from my boys’ school senior, my mind wandered to thoughts like that.
