4年前、会社の休憩のたびに会社の目の前でサッカーをしていた子たち。
この季節になると、またサッカー部が発足するのではないかと、私は少しブルブル震えていたのですが、どうやら今は『けん玉部』として活動しているようです。
以前のように、隣の敷地に入ってしまったボールを私が謝りながら取りに行くこともなく、
スケボーの音がうるさいと、近所の方から優しいお言葉をいただくこともなくなりました。
私の机の下に転がっている、かつて取り上げたサッカーボールを見るたびに、少しだけ学校の先生の気持ちを覚えます。
私たちTCBが掲げるGOALは、世界一のジーンズ。
ヨーロッパ勢も、北米勢も、もちろん強敵です。
それでも世界中の人たちの心のゴールネットを揺らすために、TCBの若者たちは今日もけん玉の小さな皿と穴に向き合い、集中力を高めているのかもしれません。
改めて、休憩のたびに本気で遊んでいる彼らを見るたびに、私はこう自分に言い聞かせています。
パタゴニアの社員だって、波が良ければサーフィンを優先するって聞いたことがある。

Four years ago, during World Cup season,
some of our younger staff members used to play soccer right in front of the factory every time we had a break.
So every time this season comes around, I find myself trembling a little, wondering if the TCB soccer club is about to make a comeback.
But apparently, these days they’ve started a “Kendama Club” instead.
Unlike before, I no longer have to go next door and apologize while retrieving balls that have flown into our neighbor’s property.
And thankfully, we no longer receive those gentle words from our neighbors about the noise of skateboards.
Every time I see the soccer ball I once confiscated still sitting under my desk, I get a small taste of what it must feel like to be a school teacher.
The GOAL that TCB is aiming for is to make the best jeans in the world.
Of course, the European teams and North American teams are very strong opponents.
Even so, in order to shake the goal nets of people’s hearts all over the world, perhaps the young members of TCB are sharpening their concentration today by facing the tiny cup and spike of a kendama.
Once again, whenever I see them playing seriously during every break, I tell myself this:
I’ve heard that even at Patagonia, if the waves are good, the employees choose surfing first.
That’s what I keep telling myself. lol
