The Intern

Connecting the Dots
Today, we welcomed a student from a fashion school in Okayama for a one-day internship at TCB.
I had almost no information about her beforehand, so I was secretly imagining something like,
“What if a nice older gentleman, like Robert De Niro, showed up as our intern?”
But the person who actually arrived was a 20-year-old student with a real presence.
Since she was here, I said,
“Why don’t you wear something from TCB and let me take some photos? Choose whatever size you like.”
The piece she chose was an oversized UNCLE CAT.
Honestly, it was a size I would never have chosen myself.
And that is exactly why the photos came out with an atmosphere that our current TCB team could never have created on our own.
Clothes change depending on who makes them.
They also change depending on who wears them.
Even the same piece can show a completely different face.
Today, she reminded me of that once again.
She was only here for one day.
By the time she had started to get used to everything, the internship was probably already over.
But even if it happens years from now, I hope this experience will become one of those moments where something connects with something else inside her.
To use one of my favorite phrases,
Connecting the Dots
I hope today becomes that kind of day for her.
Actually, I myself moved to Kojima when I was 20 years old.
Back then, I imagined that if I came to Kojima, there would be people my own age making jeans.
I imagined a place where we could talk about jeans late into the night, and where I could buy jeans directly from the people who made them.
But the reality was different.
As far as I knew, there were almost no places like that.
Maybe Kapital was the only exception.
That gap between what I imagined and what I actually found was a pretty big shock to me at 20 years old.
In that sense, it may not be an exaggeration to say that TCB is a place I have been building for the 20-year-old version of myself.
“A new generation has to grow, or Kojima’s craftsmanship will come to an end.”
I started TCB saying big things like that.
But in reality, we have only managed to increase the number of young people who want to work in manufacturing in Kojima by a small amount.
So we still have to do more.
I want more young people to think:
I want to work with clothes.
I want to make jeans.
I want to work in Kojima.
Creating even one more person like that is part of TCB’s job.
Today reminded me of that once again.
Thank you for a wonderful day.
