10年前のこと。

私がずっと狙っていたVintageが入荷したという情報を聞きつけて、高円寺へ向かいました。

無事にお目当ての物を購入でき、安心して帰ろうと思ったその時。
レジの奥で異彩を放っていたのが、レースアップ仕様のワークパンツでした。

詳しく見せてほしいと店員さんにお願いし、広げてみると、なんとハートマークタグのヴィンテージ。

でも異彩すぎて当時はなぜか、すぐにサンプリングしようとは思いませんでした。

まだベタを作って作ってなかったTCBではラインナップとしては難しいと判断したのだと思います。

それから10年。
ときどき訪れる「THE 王道ではないものを作りたい」という衝動に駆られ、ようやく製作を始めました。

タグから推測すると、元になったパンツはおそらく1940〜50年代。

TCBでも以前、同じブランドの1930年代のパンツをサンプリングし、Mule Ear Pocketsを作っています。

1930年代には針式のバックルでウエストを絞っていたのに、なぜかこの個体は、紐で絞るレースアップ仕様。

より細かくフィット感を調整したかったのか。
それとも、金属製のシンチが熱を持つような場所での作業を想定していたのか。

本当の理由は分かりません。

ただ、おそらくデザインとしてレースアップにしたわけではないはずです。
必要に迫られて生まれた仕様が、時を経た今ではデザインに見える。

いつも私がワークウェアについて熱弁していることですが、今回はまさに、その面白さを強く感じさせるパンツに仕上がりました。

生地には、Catharttシリーズと同じデニムを採用。
もちろん、Chore Coatとのセットアップでも着用していただけます。

そして今回から、このパンツとChore Coatを「Cat a log（キャタログ）」というシリーズ名で展開することになりました。

ヴィンテージのアーカイブをもとに、まるで古いカタログを眺めるようにワークウェアを楽しんでほしい。

そして、穿く人それぞれの色落ちを刻んでいく「log＝記録」。

そんな二つの意味を込めた名前です。

Ten years ago.
I heard that a vintage piece I had been searching for had arrived at a shop in Koenji, so I went straight there.
I managed to buy what I had come for and was about to leave, relieved, when something behind the counter caught my eye: a pair of work pants with a lace-up back.
I asked the shop staff if I could take a closer look. When they unfolded them, I discovered that they were a vintage pair bearing the heart-logo label.
But perhaps they stood out a little too much. For some reason, I didn’t immediately think of using them as a reference for a TCB piece.
At the time, TCB was still building the more classic foundations of its lineup, so I probably felt that a design like this would be difficult to introduce.
Ten years later, I was struck once again by the urge that comes over me from time to time—the desire to make something outside the usual workwear canon.
And so, at last, development began.
Judging by the label, the original pants were probably made sometime in the 1940s or 1950s.
TCB previously used a pair of 1930s pants from the same brand as the reference for our Mule Ear Pockets.
In the 1930s, the waist was adjusted with a prong-style cinch buckle. Yet for some reason, this later pair used a lace-up system instead.
Was it intended to allow for more precise adjustment of the fit?
Or were the pants designed for work in an environment where a metal cinch buckle might become hot?
We may never know the real reason.
But I doubt the lace-up detail was originally added simply as decoration.
It was a functional feature born out of necessity—yet with the passing of time, it now appears to us as a design element.
This is something I am always talking passionately about when it comes to vintage workwear, and these pants capture that appeal perfectly.
For the fabric, we used the same denim as our Cathartt series.
Naturally, they can also be worn as a set with the Chore Coat.
Beginning with this release, the pants and Chore Coat will be presented together under a new series name: “Cat a log.”
We hope you will enjoy these pieces of workwear, created from vintage archives, as though you were browsing through an old catalog.
At the same time, “log” represents the record that will be left behind through the unique fading created by each person who wears them.
The name “Cat a log” carries both of these meanings.
