MIRROR MIRROR

Whenever I’m working at a sewing machine on the second floor of TCB, my eyes are naturally drawn to the Late S40’s hanging on the wire-mesh partition separating the factory from the store.
Looking at the jeans we made from the very place where they were born.
No matter how many times I see them, they still look incredibly cool.
So I decided to photograph the pair of Late S40’s that I wore alongside the pair worn by Purin Purin Tanaka-san.
The same jeans, made from the same denim.
And yet, differences in how often they were worn and washed, as well as the work, movements, and everyday lives of their owners, have left a different passage of time on each pair.
Looking at them side by side, you can clearly see how the relationship between a person and their jeans can take the denim in completely different directions.
Neither one is more correct than the other.
They are both Late S40’s, shaped by the person who wore them.
They began in the same place, but they could never grow into the same pair.
That is what makes jeans so fascinating.
I once wrote the following about Purin Purin Tanaka-san’s jeans on the TCB Blog:
“Wear them hard, let them soak up the laughter from the theater stage, and wash them without hesitation.”
That, I thought, must be the secret to creating such beautiful fades.
Years ago, I heard a story that water frozen while listening to classical music would form beautiful crystals.
Since much of the human body is made of water, it made me think that we should be careful about the sounds and words we allow into our ears.
Perhaps denim is the same.
Maybe these jeans developed such a wonderful expression because they spent so much time listening to laughter.
As someone who makes jeans, I may not be able to make everyone roar with laughter, but I would at least like to make them smile.
That is what I see when I look at Purin Purin Tanaka-san’s jeans.
Recently, someone who loves plants told me something similar.
“Grow big.”
Apparently, plants grow better when you say those words to them as you give them water.
Of course, I am not trying to make a scientific argument.
But I do believe that the wearer’s joy and hard work are revealed through the way they move, the sweat they leave behind, and every wash—gradually becoming part of the clothes themselves.
Over time, those days seep into the fabric and create an expression that could belong to no one else.
I do not want to sound too spiritual, but clothes that have shared happy times somehow seem a little happier themselves.
For better or worse, jeans are like a mirror reflecting the life of the person who wears them.
Looking at Purin Purin Tanaka-san’s Late S40’s, that is what comes to mind.
P.S.
Just once, I would like to eat an omurice while someone drizzles ketchup over it and chants, “Make it delicious!”
