Leica社のあるドイツ・ウェッツラーの近くに暮らすお二人が、TCBへ遊びに来てくれました。
私もLeicaが好きなので、拙い英語ながらLeicaトーク。
そして、お互いにカメラを向けて撮り合いました。
光に敏感なLeica使いの彼にとって、まだ残暑の残る日本の光は、どのように映ったのでしょうか。
私は以前ドイツを訪れたとき、その光の美しさに驚いたことを覚えています。
どこにカメラを向けても、きれいな写真が撮れるような気がしました。
そのとき少しだけ、ウイスキーを水で割るなら、そのウイスキーが生まれた土地の水で割りたい——そう語る人の気持ちが分かった気がします。
Leicaが生まれた土地の光で、Leicaを使って写真を撮る。
それだけで、いつもとは少し違う一枚になるような気がするのです。
せっかくなので、6年前にベルリンで撮った写真も一緒に添えます。
ただ、マニュアルフォーカスで、咄嗟の連写には向かないLeica M。
せっかく目の前でキスをしてくれたのに、肝心のその瞬間を収めることはできませんでした。
日本を旅するお二人には、たくさんの瞬間を、カメラだけでなく記憶にも刻んで帰ってほしいと思います。
手前味噌ですが、旅先で買い、旅先で着たデニムも、写真と同じくらい大切な思い出を刻んでくれます。
食べ慣れない現地の料理をこぼして、服を汚してしまったとしても。
きっと明日になれば、それも旅の良い思い出です。
A couple who live near Wetzlar, Germany—the home of Leica—came to visit us at TCB.
As a fellow Leica enthusiast, I did my best to talk Leica with them in my limited English.
Then we turned our cameras on one another and took each other’s portraits.
For him, a Leica photographer with such a keen eye for light, I wonder how the lingering summer light of Japan appeared.
When I visited Germany, I remember being struck by the beauty of its light.
It felt as though I could point my camera anywhere and come away with a beautiful photograph.
At that moment, I began to understand those whisky lovers who say that if they add water to a whisky, they want it to come from the same region where the whisky was made.
To photograph with a Leica, in the very light of the land where Leica was born.
Somehow, that alone seems capable of making a photograph feel a little different.
I also happened to find some photographs I took in Berlin six years ago, so I have included them here.
The Leica M, however, with its manual focus and little inclination toward rapid-fire shooting, is not always the best camera for catching a fleeting moment.
They kissed right in front of me, but I failed to capture the moment itself.
As they continue their journey through Japan, I hope they capture many more moments—not only with their cameras, but in their memories as well.
And if you will forgive a little self-praise, denim bought and worn while travelling can hold memories just as precious as any photograph.
Even if you spill unfamiliar local food and stain your clothes along the way.
By tomorrow, that too will probably have become a good memory.
