The Cat Face BK has been out of stock in many sizes for quite some time.
We have finally completed a full restock in all sizes.
Lately, I have been wearing these pants almost every day—a black reworking of classic US Army trousers.
When you see something every day, it can be surprisingly difficult to notice how it is changing.
I had been thinking that mine had not changed very much. But when I photographed them next to a brand-new pair, I could see that they were gradually beginning to show signs of wear.
To recreate the irregular character produced by the less consistent spinning techniques of the time, we used yarn with plenty of neps.
Compared with the new pair, many of the surface neps on the pair I have been wearing have now begun to settle down.
In my experience, this is around the point when the fading gradually starts to reveal itself.
The real evolution of my Cat Face BK is only just beginning.
Turning workwear black.
That alone makes it feel as though you are dressing just a little more refined.
They remain the same rugged work pants, yet the moment they are rendered in black, they become something more elevated in my eyes.
That is the appeal of black workwear.
The fabric used for the Cat Face BK is woven with black warp yarns and natural-colored weft yarns.
In vintage clothing terminology, this is often referred to as “yarn-dyed black.”
For the warp, we use sulfur-dyed black yarns that have been rope-dyed in the same way as indigo, leaving the core of each yarn undyed.
Because the yarn is not dyed black all the way through to its core, repeated wear and washing gradually rub away the black surface, allowing the fabric to slowly change towards grey.
Rather than preserving its original black forever, the fabric records the life of the person wearing it—evolving from black to charcoal and eventually to grey.
Over time, it develops the beautifully worn-in character of vintage black workwear.
I think it would look great paired with a sweatshirt or T-shirt that has also faded from black to grey, keeping the entire outfit within the same tonal range.
Personally, my current favorite is to wear them with an indigo denim jacket or chore coat.
The blue of indigo alongside the gradually fading black.
Although both pieces have their roots in rugged workwear, changing the color combination somehow gives the outfit a more refined appearance.
This is a black fabric that can be enjoyed not only when it is new, but throughout everything that comes with wearing it in.
The Cat Face BK is now back in stock in all sizes.
