浅草 VS 上方　髪型まで東西対決
先日もご紹介しましたが、現在TCB SHOPには、お笑い芸人プリンプリンの田中さんが育ててくださったLate S40’sを展示しています。
ボキャブラ世代の私にとっては、店頭に飾られているだけでも堪らない一本です。
そして、その隣に並ぶのは、YouTubeでいつもお世話になっている、つるっとさんのS40’s。
店頭でもオンラインでも、一番多くいただくのが、
「S40’sとLate S40’sは、何が違うのですか？」
というご質問です。
せっかく両方の色落ちサンプルが揃っているので、これは良い機会だと思い、並べて撮影してみました。
そして偶然か必然か、つるっとさんも田中さん。
しかも、お二人はまさかの同じ髪型。
浅草のプリンプリン田中さんと、上方のつるっと田中さん。
これはジーンズ業界の東西対決であり、田中対決であり、髪型対決でもあります（笑）。
もう一つ、よくいただく質問があります。
「S40’sとLate S40’sでは、どちらの色目が本物に近いですか？」
私たちの答えは、とてもシンプルです。
「どちらもVintageに近い」
特に大戦モデルは、Vintageを10本集めれば、10通りの顔がある。それも大きな魅力の一つです。
大戦モデルというと、ステッチの入れ方やポケット布など、縫製や仕様の違いでバリエーションを語りがちです。
しかし私たちは、生地そのものにも複数のバリエーションが存在していたことを確認しています。
あれだけ混沌とした時代ですから、生地のロットによる振れも大きかったでしょうし、ミリタリーウェアにも大量のコットンが必要とされていた時代です。
限られた原料のなかで民間用の生地を確保するために、XX DENIMの品質や規格も、その都度見直されていたのではないか。
そんなふうに、私たちの妄想は膨らみます。
だからS40’sとLate S40’sは、どちらか一方だけが正解というわけではありません。
異なるVintageをもとに、それぞれに存在した大戦期のデニムを表現した生地です。
本当は、ぜひ両方を穿いてみてほしい。
写真や言葉だけではなく、色や生地の表情、触ったときの感覚まで含めて、その違いを肌で感じてもらえたら嬉しいです。
現在TCB SHOPでは、東のLate S40’sと西のS40’sを並べて展示しています。

Asakusa vs. Kamigata: An East–West Denim—and Hairstyle—Showdown
As I mentioned recently, a pair of Late S40’s worn and beautifully faded by Mr. Tanaka of the Japanese comedy duo Purin Purin is currently on display at TCB SHOP.
I grew up during Japan’s “Bokyabura” comedy boom of the 1990s, so simply having this pair in our shop is a real thrill for me.
Displayed right next to them is a pair of S40’s worn by Tsurutto-san, who has always supported us through his YouTube channel.
The question we receive more than any other—both in the shop and online—is:
“What is the difference between the S40’s and the Late S40’s?”
Now that we have beautifully faded examples of both models in the shop, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to place them side by side and photograph them together.
And whether by coincidence or fate, Tsurutto-san’s surname is also Tanaka.
To make things even better, the two Tanakas share the same signature hairstyle.
Mr. Tanaka of Purin Purin represents Asakusa in eastern Japan, while Tsurutto Tanaka represents Kamigata—the traditional name associated with Osaka and the Kansai region in western Japan.
So this is not only an East-versus-West denim showdown, but also a battle of the Tanakas—and even a hairstyle showdown.（笑）
There is another question we are often asked:
“Between the S40’s and the Late S40’s, which color is closer to genuine vintage denim?”
Our answer is very simple:
“Both are close to the vintage originals.”
This is especially true when it comes to WWII-era jeans.
If you gathered ten original pairs from that period, you would find ten different faces. That individuality is one of the things that makes WWII-era denim so fascinating.
When people discuss the variations found in WWII models, the conversation often focuses on details such as stitching, pocket lining fabrics, and other construction differences.
However, we have also confirmed that there were multiple variations in the denim fabrics themselves.
It was an extremely chaotic period, so there must have been considerable variation from one production lot to another. Cotton was also widely used for military clothing at the time.
With so much cotton being directed toward military production, we cannot help imagining that the quality and specifications of civilian XX denim had to be continually reconsidered in order to secure enough fabric.
The more we think about it, the more our imagination grows.
That is why neither the S40’s nor the Late S40’s represents the one and only “correct” version.
Each fabric was developed from a different vintage reference, and each represents a different expression of denim that genuinely existed during the WWII era.
Ideally, we would love for you to experience both.
Rather than judging them only through photographs or words, we hope you can see the differences in color and texture, touch the fabrics, and feel their individual character for yourself.
The Late S40’s from the East and the S40’s from the West are currently displayed side by side at TCB SHOP.

And someday, I hope we can bring these two Tanakas from East and West—with their matching hairstyles—together for a YouTube collaboration.
