Brandって何？」
そんな難しいことを語っている本を読むと、Brandという言葉は、もともと「燃えている木」や「焼き印」を意味したと出てきます。
牛に直接印を焼き付け、誰の牛なのかを示す。
それが、現在のBrandにつながっているそうです。
今日は、いつもバックルや織りネームはもちろん、レザーパッチなどの副資材でお世話になっているしんちゃんが、レザーを一匹分見せに来てくれました。
アメリカ産の牛革らしく、一頭一頭に焼き印が入っているため、通常は使えない箇所があるとのこと。
でも私は、先ほどのBrandの話を思い出して、
「これこそ本物のブランド物じゃないか！」
と、むしろ使いたくなりました笑
焼印は、おそらく「UT」。
いったい、どういう意味なんでしょうか。
UはUSAのU？
それとも、一度UFOに拉致された経験のある牛？
妄想は広がるばかりですが、このUTの焼印、避けずにそのまま使ってみても面白いのになと思っています。

Whenever I read one of those books that tackles a difficult question like that, I learn that the word “brand” originally referred to a burning piece of wood or a mark burned into something.
A mark was burned directly onto cattle to show who they belonged to.
That is where today’s idea of a brand comes from.
Today, Shin-chan—who always helps us with everything from buckles and woven labels to leather patches and other trims—stopped by to show us a whole hide.
It was American cowhide, and because each animal had been branded, there were some areas that would normally be considered unusable.
But it immediately reminded me of the origin of the word “brand.”
“Now this is genuinely branded leather!”
And suddenly, I wanted to use it even more. Haha.
The brand appears to read “UT.”
I wonder what it means.
Does the “U” stand for USA?
Or was this cow once abducted by a UFO?
My imagination keeps running wild, but I think it could be interesting to use the part with the UT brand just as it is.
