Tsurutto-san came back from the UK with new glasses, a slimmer figure, and a much sharper look.
Seeing him radiate that unmistakable just-back-from-abroad energy reminded me of school—there was always one person who returned from summer vacation looking like this.
That was my thought at the beginning of September.
In the video released today, Tsurutto-san—now fully in his international mode—introduces our Chopped Coverall, created by “chopping” a Vintage UNION-ALLS.
By coincidence, the same video also features another coverall—one I found while sorting through the warehouse at home, which I wore when I was in my teens.
It was my trusted companion when I first came to Kojima and began working at a sewing factory.
I was still taking my first steps in the industry.
Back then, mobile phones had cameras—or perhaps they barely did. It was that kind of era.
Almost no photographs remain from my first year at the factory.
There certainly aren’t any photographs of me working inside it.
It feels like a shame.
But I know for certain that I was there.
And I think the coverall featured in the video is the proof.
When I put it on again after all these years, it seemed to say:
“You haven’t been working hard enough to wear through the elbows lately!”
Of course, I doubt I could ever wear clothes as hard now as I did from my late teens into my early twenties.
Still, when the day eventually comes for me to retire, I would like to look at all the TCB pieces I have worn and aged over the years and say:
“Good work. Thank you for everything.”
And next, I want someone who wears a TCB coverall to feel the same way decades from now.
Perhaps one day, they will pull their Chopped Coverall from the back of a closet, and it will remind them of who they were when they were young—and of the years when they gave everything to their work.
“I know for certain that I was there.”
If this coverall can become that kind of garment for someone, nothing could make me happier as its maker.
TCB’s mission is not simply to sell jeans.
It is to deliver a life with jeans in it.
Or, to put it another way, to give you the energy to head to school or work on a Monday morning.
Workwear for life today.
That is what we have always wanted TCB to be.
I want to keep leaving proof that I, too, was truly here—one garment at a time, in the album called TCBjeans.
Denim may fade, but memories never do.
