About a hundred years ago, workers wore denim all-in-ones. What if we chopped one off at the waist?
That idea became the Chopped Coverall.
From the front, it looks like a slightly unusual denim coverall. On the chest are the mismatched pockets I’ve always loved—what we call gacha pockets in Japan.
A seam runs all the way around the waist, and two large pockets sit low on the back. Take away the legs, and you can still see the shape of the all-in-one that inspired it. That’s my favorite thing about this jacket.
For the fabric, we recreated Jelt Denim, originally developed in 1925. Tightly twisted yarns and a dense weave give this workwear denim both lightness and strength.
But I don’t want to stop at describing the fabric. What I really want to see is what this jacket becomes after years of wear: the creases and fading around that waist seam and those big pockets.
I want to wear one in myself.
The trouble is, when I want to see how a piece fades, I wear it constantly rather than rotating it with other jackets. The list of TCB pieces I want to break in keeps growing, and I only have one body (laughs).
If you choose a Chopped Coverall, please wear it hard. I’d love to see what yours looks like down the road.
